Precious Metals Thefts on the Rise

There has recently been a rise in the price of certain precious metals.  This has caused the increase of reported copper and catalytic converter thefts across the state of Georgia and the United States.

Thieves target catalytic converters that are attached to the underside of a vehicle as part of the exhaust system because they contain valuable metals such as platinum, palladium, or rhodium.  The thieves sell these metals for hundreds or thousands of dollars. Thieves typically use a saw or grinder to remove the converter and can have one removed in as little as one minute.  Larger vehicles are targeted because of the ease of access to the underside of the vehicle.  Vehicles parked in dark locations for multiple days are prime targets.  Other areas of concern are car lots, large parking lots, rideshare lots, and any other areas a large number of vehicles park for extended periods of time.  If you are driving, or out in the community after business hours, and hear what sounds like metal being cut in a parking lot area, please call your local law enforcement agency in order to try and apprehend these thieves.

The price of copper is also on the rise.  If you have vacant homes, or businesses in your area, please pay attention to who comes in and out of these places.  Notify local law enforcement if you see someone removing copper wire or tubing from these vacant places.  If you own some of these vacant places try painting your copper black as it will appear to be just black tubing instead of copper.  Have an alarm system or security cameras installed for the property.

As always if you are out in the community and see something that you believe is suspicious please notify your local law enforcement agency to report it.  If you can safely photograph the suspicious activity or a vehicle tag and provide that information to law enforcement it would assist in the investigation of that incident.  See something, Say Something!

Thank you!

School Food Pantry Donations

On November 19th 2020, several members of our SCOPE Division visited area elementary schools to deliver food items that were donated by Local Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 13 in Mableton. Several personnel from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office are also members of that lodge. FOP Lodge 13 donates food each year before Thanksgiving to schools in Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas, and Paulding Counties. Each school then distributes the food to needy students and their families in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. We look forward to participating in this event each year.

DCSO Awarded Traffic Enforcement Grant

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce it has received a $300,000.00 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).

The goal of the H.E.A.T. program is to combat crashes, injuries and fatalities caused by impaired driving and speeding, while also increasing seatbelt use and educating the public about traffic safety and the dangers of DUI.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office H.E.A.T Unit will use the grant from GOHS to develop and implement strategies to reduce local traffic crashes due to aggressive and dangerous driving behaviors. GOHS H.E.A.T. grants are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“The loss of one life on our roads is one too many, and the fact almost all fatal traffic crashes can be prevented is one reason why we are awarding this grant,” Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Director Allen Poole said. “The target of zero traffic deaths in our nation is achievable, and we will continue to help develop and implement educational messages and enforcement campaigns aimed at bringing our state one step closer to that goal.”

Totaling $6.7 million for 2021, H.E.A.T. grants fund specialized traffic enforcement activities in counties throughout the state. The program was designed to assist Georgia jurisdictions with the highest rates of traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities with grants awarded based on impaired driving and speeding data.

As law enforcement partners in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over DUI and Click It or Ticket seatbelt campaigns, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will also conduct mobilizations throughout the year in coordination with GOHS’s year-round waves of high visibility patrols, concentrated patrols, and multi-jurisdictional sobriety checkpoints.

The grant year for this award will be October 1 of 2020 to September 30 of 2021.

For more information on this grant program, contact GOHS at 404-656-6996 and for more information on GOHS and its other highway safety programs, visit www.gahighwaysafety.org.
