Special Olympics Cookout 2018

Sheriff Tim Pounds would like to say thank you to Mr. Jack Clower for the invitation to attend his annual Special Olympics awards ceremony and cookout. This event is held at Mr. Clower’s property every year in an effort to recognize the athletes who aren’t able to travel much outside the community. The care and respect Mr. Clower shows these athletes is both admirable and heartwarming.

Cornerstone Early Learning Center Field Trip

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the teachers and students from Cornerstone Early Learning Center for stopping by today. MSgt. Jesse Hambrick showed the kids around most of our facility, and answered a lot of questions during the tour. If your organization would like to tour our facility, please contact either Lt. Elmer Horn at ehorn@sheriff.douglas.ga.us or MSgt. Jesse Hambrick at jhambrick@sheriff.douglas.ga.us.

Community Day 2018

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was once again invited to participate in the annual Community Day Cookout hosted by the Anneewakee Trails Home Owners’ Association. Sheriff Pounds was on hand to grill up hot dogs for everyone, and the hot weather definitely gave the Polar Patrol a workout. We would like to thank the Citizens Law Enforcement Academy Alumni of Douglas County for their help and support.

2018 Kids’ Law Enforcement Academy

Chief Michael Mansour and Sheriff Tim Pounds have again partnered for the 2018 Kids Law Enforcement Academy (KLEA). Joining us in this partnership is the Douglas County Board of Education. This is a free one week day camp that introduces kids to different aspects of law enforcement in a friendly and fun environment. The academy will be held July 16th – 20th from 9am – 3pm at Mirror Lake Elementary.

The Kids Academy is for children who will be in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 for the 2018-2019 school year. Attendees must be a resident of the City of Villa Rica (Carroll or Douglas County side) or Douglas County and not have attended the Academy in the past 3 years.

Applications are at the Villa Rica Police Department (101 Main St, Villa Rica) and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (8470 Earl D. Lee Rd, Douglasville). ALL applications MUST be turned into either agency no later than Sunday July 8th.

For the comfort and safety of the children, parents and or guardians will not be allowed to be present during the academy. A special graduation ceremony will be held on Friday July 20th that is open for parents/guardians.

Gammill Run 2018

The 14th annual Blake Gammill run/walk was held at Boundary Waters Park on Saturday, May 19th, 2018. The rains held off on race day and we had almost 200 registered racers participating. There were several others from the community who came out to support the runners. Several members from the various high school ROTC programs, lead by DCSO Deputy Tony Carr, came out and participated in the race as well. We would like to give thanks to all of this year’s sponsors. Special thanks to the Douglas County Parks and recreation department for continued support in allowing the race to be held at Boundary Waters Park. As always our volunteers from the Douglas County Rogue Runners, DCSO CLEA, and Explorers were very much appreciated. Special recognition was given for the Douglasville-Douglas County WSA for having 47 registered racers, the most for a single organization. Blake’s parents, Dale and Stella Gammill were both in attendance and were pleased with the turnout. As always this year’s proceeds will be used to fund training and equipment for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team. Results of the race can be found at .

Thieves Break Into Multiple Vehicles

On May 24, 2018 Sheriffs officials were notified about several entering autos that had occurred in the overnight hours in the Central Church/ Reid Rd area. In one instance, a homeowner interrupted the suspects attempting to steal items from a vehicle. The suspects upon fleeing produced a firearm and fired multiple shots into the ground. No one was injured. Throughout the morning the Sheriff’s office searched the surrounding area in an attempt to locate the individuals responsible. In all, approximately 17 vehicles were entered and a vehicle that was stolen out of Union City Georgia was recovered. Preliminary investigation shows that the individuals responsible for the thefts were not from Douglas County and most likely from South Fulton County.

We would like to remind everyone to lock your vehicles at night and remove all valuables. This includes any firearms you may keep in your vehicle. All of the vehicles entered in these instances were unlocked. This has become a pattern across metro Atlanta with thieves targeting the easiest opportunity.
