Multiple Agencies Participated in an Active Shooter Drill

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Douglas County Fire Department, Douglas County Board of Education, Douglas County Emergency Management Agency, Douglas County Emergency 911, Douglas Wellstar Hospital, Douglasville Police Department, Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Georgia State Patrol, Cobb/Douglas Public Health, Air Methods, and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office conduced an active shooter training exercise on July 25th, 2018. This large-scale training drill was meant to test the resources of all the above-mentioned agencies in an effort to better prepare Douglas County First Responders in the event of a mass casualty active shooter event. This event was carefully planned beginning in January of this year and included hours of planning as well as one table top exercise conducted early in the planning stages.

This full-scale training exercise consisted of a scenario in which an armed intruder entered Mason Creek Middle School as an active shooter. Over 200 civilian volunteers participated in this event as well as over 125 first responders and emergency care providers to simulate as realistic an event as possible. Numerous police, fire and EMS units from many agencies responded to the school during the drill, including a simulated helicopter evacuation of a victim by Air Methods. Dozens of site safety officers were in place to ensure that the drill was completed as safely as possible.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank everyone involved in this large-scale training event. While we hope that we’ll never have to implement this kind of response, it’s better to plan and train for the worst than to be caught unprepared.

Two Arrested for Bomb Threat at Food Depot

On Tuesday June 26, 2018, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed robbery call at the Food Depot at 3697 Hwy 5 in Douglasville.

Deputies and investigators arrived on scene and learned that a male suspect entered the store, produced a device stating it was a bomb and robbed one of the cashiers of the money from the cash drawer and left the store. It was later learned the suspect left in a dark colored car that was parked in the store parking lot and fled the scene.

During the investigation, the identity of the suspect was learned and identified as, Anthony Lerone Jackson, 48 years old of Douglasville, Ga. A second suspect, who was with Jackson during the robbery, was identified as Yolanda Renea Smith, 48 years old, also of Douglasville, Ga.

Warrants were taken for Anthony Jackson and Yolanda Smith and on July 11, 2018, both were taken into custody.

Both suspects are charged with Armed Robbery and held in the Douglas County Jail without bond.

K9 Neo’s New Vest

Sheriff Tim Pounds and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit welcomed K9 Neo to the pack earlier this year. When dog lovers Phil and Peggy Detore read the story on the Douglasville Patch, they wanted to help equip K9 Neo. They were soon put in touch with handler/trainer Sgt. Ryan Cadwell, and expressed a desire to purchase a vest for K9 Neo. With the help of Tonya Power, who handles inventory and ordering uniforms and equipment for the Sheriff’s Office, a vest was sized and ordered for K9 Neo. The vest is of the same type and quality as the vests worn by the human deputies. We cannot adequately express our gratitude for such a generous donation.

Cleaning at the New Tag Office and County Shop

The old Bleakley RV dealership recently got a new lease on life, and a huge makeover. The property was reopened earlier this year as the new Douglas County Tag Office and county fleet building. Years of standing empty resulted in overgrown landscaping, and one of our inmate work crews was tasked with clearing out and cleaning up the property.

Ice Cream Social 2018

It was a hot, hot afternoon in Douglasville on Sunday which was perfect for #NationalIceCreamDay. Lt. Elmer Horn handed out close to 550 push pops, popsicles, and ice cream sandwiches. This yearly event is a great way for us to interact with the community and citizens in a fun and positive way.

Welcome, New Hires

Please welcome the two newest additions to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office: Bailiff O. Adams (pictured left) and Jailer M. Keener (pictured right).

Community Day at Mt. Vernon Point and Greythorne

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office recently participated in a community day event for Mt. Vernon Point and Greythorne. Below is an excerpt from the thoughtful thank you letter we received.

The HOA Boards for both Mount Vernon Point (MVP) and Greythome (GT) communities would like to express our appreciation for honoring our outreach request for Douglas County Sheriffs Office (DCSO) to participate in our annual community day festivities this past Saturday.

Complementing our delicious food trucks, balloon artist, moonwalk, video game truck, etc. fun, was the popular DCSO Polar Patrol with delightful ice cream and the impressive Sound Truck to pump-up our spirit. DCSO’s trio of Horn, Wilson, and Brooks offered a very special engagement to our community event. Their interaction with our residents, generosity of canopy covers for the hot sun, and sincere interest in being a part of this event truly made a difference. It was truly awesome! You guys rock!

Next time, we’re looking forward to having them and you join us in line dancing. We are happy to have DCSO as our neighbors-in-law.
