Man Arrested in Shooting Incident

On August 31, 2020, Douglas County Sheriffs Office patrol units were dispatched to a call of a person who was shot at I-20 and Lee Road in Lithia Springs, GA. Deputies responded and met with the victim who suffered gunshot wounds in the incident. The victim stated he was traveling west bound on I-20 between Thornton Road and Lee Road when a silver pickup truck approached his vehicle from behind flashing the bright lights at the victim. The victim exited to Lee Road whereas the suspect vehicle followed, and pulled up beside the victim. Without warning, an occupant of the silver truck shouted obscenities at the victim and then fired rounds into the victim’s vehicle striking him twice. The suspect truck then fled onto I-20 east.

The victim was able to provide a detailed description of the suspect vehicle and occupant information to deputies and investigators on the scene. A thorough investigation ultimately led to suspect Turan Rogers Melton, 25 years-of-age from Mableton, GA.

On October 2, 2020, Investigators executed a search warrant on the residence of Turan Melton where he was arrested and his 2010 Chevrolet Silverado truck was seized as evidence. Turan Melton is currently charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and criminal attempt to commit murder. His initial court appearance was held on Oct. 5, 2020, and Melton is currently being held at the Douglas County Jail without bond. Melton is also a suspect in several other shootings around the Metro-Atlanta area.

Man Arrested After Striking Deputy With Stolen Patrol Car

On September 28, 2020, Douglas County 911 received a call about an intruder on Lake Filed Drive breaking into a home and attacking the homeowner.  Kilpatrick Key was identified as that intruder who was known to the residents at that location.  He had been served a Temporary Protective Order from the Douglas County Superior Court to restrain himself from being at that location or contact with any family member that lived there.

Key forcibly entered the residence and began stabbing the victim in front of minor children who were in the home.  Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the residence.

The initial arriving Deputy entered the residence upon hearing the victim’s cry for help.  Key fled the house and got into the Deputy’s marked patrol car as the Deputy gave chase out of the house, Key drove straight into the Deputy who was in the yard of the residence near the entry to the house.  The Deputy was struck by the car and Key fled leading other arriving Deputies on a high-speed chase through the neighborhood and on Reynolds Road where Key crashed the patrol car and fled on foot.  Key was subsequently captured near the crash scene.

Key is charged with 3 counts of Aggravated assault, 2 counts of Aggravated battery, Home Invasion 1st degree, Aggravated Stalking, Felony Obstruction, Interference with Government Property, Theft by Taking, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude, and three counts of Cruelty to Children in the 3rd degree.  Key had a bond hearing on September 29, 2020 in front of Magistrate Judge Susan Camp who denied his bond.  Key is a US Army Reservist with the 3rd Medical Command out of Forrest Park, GA.

Home Health Care Worker Posing as a Registered Nurse Arrested

On August 10, 2020, Sheriff’s investigators arrested Heather Denise Banks for identity theft of a Registered Nurse. Banks was providing skilled medical care to individuals using some else’s identity. Banks was employed with Omni Healthcare Services in Lithia Springs, Georgia.

Information was obtained in July that Banks was working for Omni Healthcare Services as a Registered Nurse providing home health care. She was responsible for providing medical assistance to children that had serious medical conditions requiring treatment outside of the hospital setting. Over the course of the investigation, it was confirmed that Banks had used the license of a certified Registered Nurse which she had obtained by illegals means. It was also confirmed through the Georgia Secretary of State’s Professional Licensing Board that Banks did not hold a license to work as a Registered Nurse in the State of Georgia.

When Banks was arrested, she confirmed that she was posing as a Registered Nurse for more money and had only completed a Certified Nursing Assistant program. This is a major concern to public safety since Banks does not have the proper training and has admitted to working with at least two children in a home setting. Banks also admitted to being employed as a Registered Nurse at another agency prior to the one she was dismissed from but did not disclose that location.

Banks is currently charged with the following:

  • Damaged to property 1st degree
  • Cruelty to Children
  • Identity Theft
  • Reckless Conduct
  • Forgery in the 1st Degree
  • Willful Destruction of Medical Records

This case is still active. Investigators are asking that anyone with information about Banks or other companies she may have worked with to contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 678-486-1242.
