The LESS Crime Act in Georgia, formally known as the Law Enforcement Strategic Support Act, allows taxpayers to receive a dollar for dollar tax credit for donations made to qualified law enforcement foundations (QLEFs), encouraging support for local public safety efforts.The funds donated through the LESS Crime Act are intended to support local law enforcement through various means, like training officers, purchasing or maintaining equipment, or establishing mental health co-responder programs.

In essence, the LESS Crime Act allows taxpayers in Georgia to redirect a portion of their state tax liability to support local law enforcement foundations, giving them a more direct role in improving public safety in their communities.

Here's How It Works:

Tax Credit

Businesses and individuals can receive a Georgia income tax credit for contributions made to certified law enforcement foundations.

Eligible Funds

Contributions can be used for such things as salary supplements, training, equipment, and operational costs.

Pre-Approval

Businesses and individuals need to pre-approve their intended contribution with the Georgia Department of Revenue.

If you have never filed an income tax return with the Georgia Department of Revenue, you must call the Taxpayer Services Call Center at (877) 423-6711 to become registered before you can submit your request.

Reporting

Qualified law enforcement foundations must meet transparency requirements by submitting annual reports and publishing budget details.

Contribution Process

Businesses and individuals must electronically notify the Foundation Contact of their contribution amount and then make the contribution.

After you make your contribution, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office will fill out a form IT-QLED_LEF1 and send it to you.

Tax Credit Claim

Businesses and individuals must attach the form IT-QLED_LEF1 (from "Step 3" above) to their tax return to claim the credit.

LESS Crime Act Tax Credit

The LESS Crime Act allows for the following tax credits for annual state income tax liability

  • Single individual or Head of Household: $5,000

  • Married Filing Jointly: $10,000

  • Limited Liability Company (LLC), or Shareholder of a Subchapter (S) corporation or partner in a partnership: $10,000

  • Large corporations: up to 75% of their state income tax
