Man Arrested in Gas Station Shooting

On December 18, 2019, members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Texaco located at 2195 Fairburn Road in reference to an individual discharging a firearm. While at the scene a male arrived at Douglas Wellstar Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The investigation concluded that three individuals drove to the Texaco to purchase marijuana from Christopher Menjivar. During the transaction, Menjivar fired a weapon at their vehicle striking one of the passengers. Menjivar fled the scene, but was located by investigators the following day in Cobb County. Menjivar was arrested and charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon.

A quick shout out to all our deputies and investigators involved in identifying and apprehending the perpetrator so quickly, once again, GREAT JOB!!!

Little Lending Library Comes to DCSO

Sheriff Tim Pounds and staff would like to thank the students at Brighten Academy for the gift of a little lending library. This library was built by the students as a way to give back to their community. Books donated by the kids will be available in our Bonding and Visitation building for visitors to read while they are waiting for to either visit with or pick up their loved one. We appreciate the time and thoughtfulness the students put into this project. We would also like to recognize Capt. Tim Sword for working closely with the students and their teacher, Mrs. Cuyler, on the design and message of the little library.

Polar Train Visits Deer Lick Park

Deer Lick Park recently hosted a polar train for a recent event thanks to one of our inmate work crews.

Kids’ Christmas Shopping 2019

Sheriff Tim Pounds and staff at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were happy to participate in this year’s Christmas shopping event hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Douglas County. There were 120 students from area schools that participated and escorted through the Walmart Douglasville store in search of presents for themselves as well as family. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, Douglasville Police Department, Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, Douglas County Fire/EMS Department, and other city and county employees also participated. We look forward to participating again next year!

Mason Creek Elementary DARE Graduation

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office brought back the DARE program starting this year, and it is Deputy Hutcheson’s first year teaching DARE classes. The ten-week DARE curriculum is aimed at teaching 5th Graders the dangers of drugs, as well as how to cope with negative outside influences such as bullies and stress. At the end of the semester, each student is asked to write an essay about what they learned from the DARE program. One student from each homeroom is chosen as a class winner based on their essay. Out of those students, a single overall school winner is chosen. That student will then participate in a “DARE Day” during the summer break of 2020. Previous outings have been to places such as Six Flags and other metro-Atlanta amusement-type parks. They then end the day with a pizza party at Chuck E. Cheese. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and in particular Deputy “Hutch,” are very proud of these students for making it so hard to pick the winning essays.

Congratulations, Alisha!

Alisha Whiteley is another DCSO long-timer who recently decided to retire after 20 years of service. While she was with the sheriff’s office, Alisha worked closely with jail personnel and courthouse staff to process sentence orders and other inmate-related information. Twenty years has certainly gone by way too quickly, and we will certainly miss having her around the office!

Congratulations, Capt. Sword

Our Maintenance Division Captain, Lamar Newborn, recently retired with over 40 years of service, and Lt. Tim Sword was promoted to take his place. Capt. Sword has been a fixture around the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for close to 30 years, and this promotion is well-deserved!
