In Memoriam: Major James Thomas “Tommy” Wheeler, Ret.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office regrets to announce the passing of retired Major James Thomas “Tommy” Wheeler, Ret. Major Wheeler worked for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office from January 1st, 1973 until his retirement on February 1st, 2014 as the Major over law enforcement. Major Wheeler was a graduate of the 83rd AOC at the Southern Police institute at the University of Louisville. During his career, Major Wheeler worked in the Patrol Division, Criminal and Special Investigations Divisions. He is survived by his wife, Karla and his two sons Jeff and W.T. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Georgia Sheriff’s Association Youth Homes.

Man Arrested for Marijuana and Cocaine Sales

The Special Investigations Division of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office arrested James E. Foster, aged 30, of Douglasville, Georgia on 9/20-17 for multiple counts of sales of marijuana and cocaine in violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act. James Foster sold illegal narcotics to undercover agents working with the Special Investigations Division during the month of September. Agents executed a search warrant at Fosters residence located in Douglasville, Georgia and a business address associated with Foster on Fairburn Road in Douglasville, Georgia.

Two Men Arrested for Multiple Drug-Related Offenses

Agents with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Division began an investigation in July of 2017 into Patrick Oakley of Douglasville, Georgia after a complaint was received from a concerned citizen about illegal activity. The complaint was that Patrick was selling Alprazolam (Xanax) pills and Marijuana that he gets delivered through the U.S. mail. As a result of this investigation Agents were able to purchase both Xanax and Marijuana from Patrick on two separate occasions.

Agents working with the United States Postal Service were also able to intercept packages that were scheduled to be delivered to Patrick Oakley at his residence in Douglasville, and these packages contained approximately 262 Alprazolam “Xanax” pills and blister packs containing Tramadol, a commonly abused pain reliever. These items were seized by the postal inspector and turned over to the Sheriff’s Office Investigator.

On September 28, 2017 agents of the Special Investigations unit and the Crime Suppression unit served arrest warrants and a search warrant at Oakley’s residence on in Douglasville, Georgia. During the execution of these warrants there was marijuana in plain view on a desk in the residence. The marijuana weighed approximately five (5) grams. Pipes with marijuana residue and rolling papers were also present with the marijuana.

In the bedroom belonging to Patrick Oakley Agents located approximately twenty-three (23) grams of marijuana, 180 Alprazolam (Xanax) pills, 11 MDMA “Ecstasy” tablets, and numerous e-cigarette cartridges that contained illegal amounts of THC oil. Agents also located a safe containing a large sum of cash, approximately $17,000.00. A postal box from the U.S. Postal Service was found in the residence that contained multiple packs of E-cigarette cartridges that contained THC oil. Agents also recovered blister packs containing 7 Tramadol and 25 Tapentadol Hydrochloride tablets.

Another resident of the address searched, Chandler Davis, was charged with misdemeanor marijuana (5 grams) and drug related objects for the marijuana located in the residence.

Patrick Oakley was charged with numerous felonies that include:

  • Criminal attempt to possess alprazolam and tramadol for the packages that were intercepted,
  • Possession of marijuana (23 grams) with intent to distribute,
  • Possession with intent Alprazolam (Xanax),
  • Possession of tramadol,
  • Possession with intent to distribute MDMA (ecstasy),
  • Possession with intent to distribute THC oil.

 

6th Annual Trunk or Treat

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Douglasville Police Department are teaming up once again for the annual Trunk or Treat at the Courthouse! The event will be held SUNDAY, October 29th from 4 – 8 pm. We will be handing out candy to kids under the age of 14.

This event draws thousands every year, and it keeps getting bigger! If anyone would like to donate store-bought candy or make a monetary contribution, they can stop by our lobby. We will take donations up until Oct. 29.

Welcome, New Jailers

Sheriff Tim Pounds and the staff at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office would like to welcome our three newest jailers: McKenzie Brown, Justin Roberts, and Erica Waters. Erica comes to us with years of dispatch experience with the goal of working towards becoming an Investigator. Justin’s goal is to move on to Patrol and ultimately become a K9 officer. McKenzie recently graduated high school and was in our Explorers program.

 

Demo at The Church at Chapelhill

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit would like to thank The Church at Chapelhill for their generous donation. The money will be put towards getting the K9s new leashes, harnesses, and other handling equipment. Our handlers also enjoyed spending the morning with a great group of kids, and we hope to come back soon!

Polar Patrol Artist

Congratulations to Jonathan Melchor, a student at Lithia Springs Elementary School. He was one of the many artists who helped design our Polar Patrol truck. His multi-colored lettering and inclusion of a stop sign on the back window were integral to the overall design. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all the artists who sent in their ideas!

Thank You, Heirway Christian Academy

We would like to thank Heirway Christian Academy for dropping off goodies this morning! It’s their tradition to provide snacks, drinks, and prayers to first responders on the anniversary of September 11th. However, this year Hurricane Irma had other ideas and postponed the kids’ trip a week. We are truly grateful for their generosity and sweetness.

New Boccie Ball Courts

Last week, one of our work crews assembled some Boccie ball courts for some very special Special Olympics athletes at Boundary Waters.

Last night, Lt. Brian Camp was presented with the Arthur M. Kaplan award. This was presented to him by the Atlanta Masonic Lodge for his contributions as a First Responder.

Entering Autos (Parkside Village)

On September 4, 2017, The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded several vehicles that were entered and Items stolen in the Parkside Village Subdivision. The Suspect(s) entered over 25 vehicles that were unlocked. Below is a clip of a suspect.
