PRESS RELEASE

Douglas County Sheriff's Office Patrol Unit Hit by a D.U.I. driver on Interstate 20

On Wednesday March 23, 2016 at approximately 1:30am a Douglas County Sheriff's patrol unit was hit by a suspect that was later determined to be driving under the influence on Interstate 20 westbound near the Lee Road exit.

The deputy had just finished assisting a motorist changing a flat tire on their vehicle. After the tire was replaced the motorist's vehicle would not start. The deputy then positioned his patrol vehicle to block one lane of traffic for the safety of the stranded motorist so that another vehicle (that was also assisting the stranded motorist) could pull up to the vehicle to try and jump start the vehicle.

While blocking one lane of Interstate 20, our patrol vehicle was struck in the rear by a 1989 Chevrolet S-10 driven by a male subject. Our deputy was still in the patrol car. He was treated at a local hospital and later released. The intoxicated driver received a severe laceration to his head area, a possible broken pelvis and was transported to a local hospital. The Georgia State Patrol investigated and worked the accident.
