Deputy Mark Matthews and State Representative Micah Gravely would like to bring before the Georgia legislature a bill to create a Georgia specialty license plate honoring law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. At present, only eight other States offer these types of tags.
Like all personalized tags there are added fees. Those fees would be dispersed with money going to both the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C. (in the name of Georgia citizens) and to a Georgia fund (to be set up) for the in State education for children of Georgia Law Enforcement Officers Killed in the Line Duty.
We need your help! To prove there is great interest in this type of tag, we need to present to the House of Representatives, hundreds of registered Georgia voter signatures showing they back the idea of honoring the memory of those who have lost their lives serving their community. Starting this week, we will have petition sheets in the main lobby of the Sheriff's Office for all interested parties to sign. The next legislative session starts on January 11, 2016. The deadline for turning in the petitions would be sometime after that. We will send out an update once we know of an exact date.
For those outside Douglas County who would still like to participate, they can download a copy of the petition to sign. Please return signed forms to:

This was a great day for the second Google Gravity Games. The event is a real-world experience for students and adults from across the state to use STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills to build and race their own gravity-powered cars. Cars may be propelled only using gravity to get them across the finish line. There were over 30 teams registered this year with a lot of friends, family, teachers, and classmates to cheer on the drivers. Speaking of drivers, congratulations to Devon Harrell who drove our "derby division" car into first place ahead of the Douglasville Police Department and the Douglas County Fire/EMS Department.
